Coronations

The Coronation Room is attracting lots of visitor interest, particularly with our overseas visitors.

As we all know, the Bishop of Bath and Wells has, for centuries, supported the monarch on their left. Who can forget Bishop Michael supporting Charles III at his coronation.

However, research undertaken in 2024 has shown that not all Bishops of Bath and Wells fulfilled this role. So far, it has been determined that ten monarchs were definitely not supported by the Bishop of Bath and Wells. This document will give you more information.

The image above is of the coronation of James II. Bishop Ken is shown on the right of the monarch – he is identified by the letter ‘D’ above his head.
