Building History
This beautiful Palace has an impressive history and the buildings reflect the high status and prestige of the early Bishops who were responsible for much of what you see today. This document contains extracts from a much bigger document, commissioned in 2006, to inform the development of the site. It gives an historic perspective to The Palace and grounds, provides detailed information on how the buildings evolved over the centuries, covering the style of architecture and the people responsible, and includes lots of illustrations.
The stones used to build the Palace illustrate an intriguing geological history and a booklet, put together by Doug Robinson, a retired geologist, and the late Chris King, gives insight into this. This booklet is for our use only and is not to be copied or used for anything else other than volunteering at the Bishop’s Palace.
