Othello

This powerful open-air production captures the intensity, poetry and drama of Shakespeare’s original text, bringing to life a devastating tale of jealousy, manipulation and betrayal. When Othello, a respected General in the Venetian army, promotes Cassio over Iago, he unknowingly sets in motion a campaign of deception that spirals towards tragedy.

In a land of daring quests, noble knights and endless jousting, a would-be hero named Arthur finds himself thrust into the adventure of a lifetime. When Camelot is thrown into chaos by a tragic, and rather unlikely, incident involving a large table of an undisclosed shape, Arthur must embark on a quest that will test his courage, determination and luck.

Will he battle through blistering cold and scorching fire to save his beloved kingdom, or will fate have other plans? Packed with comedy, adventure and unexpected twists, this original production brings a fresh and hilarious take on one of Britain’s most famous legends.

Join us at The Bishop’s Palace this summer for a delightful open-air performance of The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan’s much-loved comic opera filled with memorable songs, witty humour and outrageous misunderstandings. Set within the beautiful grounds of the Palace in Wells, this promises to be a wonderful evening of live theatre for audiences of all ages.

Frederick was accidentally apprenticed to a band of pirates as a child and believes he is finally free when he reaches his 21st birthday. However, the Pirate King discovers a small but significant detail in the contract. Born on 29 February in a leap year, Frederick has technically celebrated only four birthdays and must remain indentured to the pirates for another 63 years.

With only the Penzance constabulary to support him, can Frederick escape a lifetime of piracy and be reunited with his beloved Mabel? Packed with comic twists and larger-than-life characters, this timeless tale remains as entertaining and relevant today as when it first premiered.

Yes, you’re very welcome to bring your own picnic. An outdoor bar will also be available serving cold drinks, ice cream and alcoholic refreshments.

 

Is seating provided?

No, seating is not provided. Please bring something comfortable to sit on, such as a picnic blanket or low-backed chair.

 

Can I bring umbrellas or parasols?

Standard umbrellas are fine if needed, but large parasols or beach-style umbrellas are not permitted as they can block the view for other guests.

 

Are the performances suitable for children?

Some performances are family-friendly, while others are more suited to adults. Please check individual show details before booking.
