Once you’ve visited The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens there’s lots to see and do in Wells!
Wells Cathedral
Our neighbour, Wells Cathedral, is the earliest English Cathedral to be built in the Gothic style and offers guided tours of the stunning building throughout the day. With centuries of stories to share it’s worth a visit.
The Cathedral and The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens are separate organisations but offer a combined joint day ticket which you can purchase HERE.
Wells and Mendip Museum
Wells and Mendip Museum is next to the Cathedral and is the home of Wells City Archives: here you can find out more about the history of Wells and surrounding area. The museum is always the hub of any exciting city events so whether it’s Heritage Open Days or a temporary exhibition, there is always something new to see.
Vicars' Close
Vicars’ Close is a must see! This medieval, cobbled street was built in the 14th century by Bishop Ralph as a residence for the men of the choir to keep them away from the temptations of the town, particularly the ale houses and women! With the Vicars Choral being much better behaved these days the Close is still lived in by members of the choir (which now also includes women!).
Wells Market
If you’re in Wells on a Wednesday or Saturday the Market is a real treat. Packed with local food producers, and right in the heart of the city, there is a fantastic atmosphere and if the sight of the scrumptious food cooking doesn’t get you the smells will!
Mendip Hills AONB
In recognition of its special qualities, the area around Wells has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or National Landscape. It’s a great location for walking, caving, cycling or for simply enjoying the stunning scenery.
Looking for somewhere to stay or for an evening out? The Crown in the Market Place may look familiar if you are a fan of Hot Fuzz but the links with The Crown go back much further than that. Bishop Bekynton commissioned the building of The Crown back in 1450 and we’ve remained close neighbours ever since.
Also nearby is the newly re-vamped boutique hotel The White Hart which has a Michelin starred chef at the restaurant and the beautiful and historic Swan Hotel.
