Steeped in history, The Palace and Gardens sit at the heart of the historical and medieval city of Wells in Somerset.
In fine weather the Palace building, terrace and gardens are the perfect backdrop for your reception. The atmospheric medieval entrance hall with it’s roaring log fire offers a wonderful alternative in colder months.

14 acres of perfectly kept gardens for you and your guests to enjoy, the gardens really have something quite magical about them.
With the moat surrounding The Palace, offering the tranquil sounds of flowing water, the stunning backdrop of Wells Cathedral, picturesque willow bridge and seasonal flowers and plants all year round the gardens provide the most beautiful space for you and your friends and family to gather and the perfect backdrop to your wedding photography.
The Wedding Feast
Lit with candles, the Palace’s medieval Undercroft is a truly magical location for your wedding breakfast boasting a magnificent, vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows. Seating 144 at maximum capacity along our bespoke wooden banqueting tables or 155 for an evening reception it provides the ideal intimate atmosphere.
Choose one of our approved caterers for your day; they’ll also arrange a menu tasting session and provide staff, linen and tableware.
Following your speeches and the cutting of the cake, you can retire to the Palace’s elegant Long Gallery for tea and coffee.
Relax and take time to enjoy this more informal part of your day with your guests whilst we transform the Undercroft into the space for your first dance as a married couple. Whatever your choice of music (live or a DJ) you can relax and enjoy the festivities.
Autumn/Winter Weddings

Imagine windows softly lit, roaring fire in the entrance hall and a glass of warmed mulled punch! The Palace has something to offer all year round, especially in Winter.
The gardens remain beautifully kept, with an array of colours in the trees and borders to hold interest. The crystal-clear waters of the moat and waterfall are a truly magical sight.

Wedding Ceremonies
Whilst The Bishop’s Palace doesn’t have a wedding licence you can choose from a number of approved premises within a short walk for your ceremony including St Thomas’ Church, St Cuthbert’s Church or the elegant building of Wells Town Hall, adjacent to the Palace in Wells’ historic marketplace.
