Gardener’s Corner: October 2024
We have had a real mix of weather this September, and it must have been one of the wettest on record. Most of the rain fell in short periods, leading to a very muddy Well Pool and moat. It did not affect us too much in the garden, as there was also plenty of warm, dry weather. The gardens have been very colourful and will continue to be in October, particularly in the hot border, Jocelin border (Asters, Geraniums, roses, and more), Wells border (Astrantia, Salvia, Sedums, and Asters), and prairie border.
Many of September’s tasks continue into October. Hedge cutting and long grass cutting are the main tasks, weather permitting! We aim to finish cutting all the Euonymus hedges and the yew hedge in the hot border. We will also cut all the grass in the arboretum and on the rampart bank, which is a huge task. If you cut long grass areas before September (here in Somerset), you are unlikely to see any summer-flowering orchids, as they do not have time to set seed. Our pyramid orchids did not produce any seeds until very late this year.
This is also a great time to empty borders, split plants, and replant, as well as plant up borders with new stock. In the Community Garden, Jo has harvested most of the produce and has had a great crop of colourful squash. The melons in the greenhouse have also done very well!
If you have any questions about our gardens, please feel free to ask me or any of the garden team. We look forward to seeing you throughout October!
