The Bishop’s Palace will be illuminated in pink and yellow from 27 to 29 March as part of the national “Light Up the UK” campaign, raising awareness of brain tumours and showing support for those affected.
Joining landmarks across the country, the historic Palace will glow in the campaign’s colours for one weekend only, offering a striking visual moment in the heart of the city and a chance for the local community to come together in support of an important cause.
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, yet remain underfunded. The campaign, led by Brain Tumour Research, aims to shine a light on the urgent need for greater awareness and research.
At the Palace, the campaign also carries a deeply personal meaning for one member of staff, Moira Anderson, whose husband was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2022.
She said: “When Simon was diagnosed with a brain tumour, it was one of those moments that changes everything. There was relief in finally having answers, but also so much uncertainty about what lay ahead. His surgery was a success, and we know how fortunate we are, but life is still very different — with ongoing scans, medication and lasting impacts day to day.
Taking part in Light Up the UK feels incredibly important. It’s a way of showing support for everyone affected, and of reminding people that there is still so much more to understand about brain tumours. Greater awareness can help drive the research that is so urgently needed.”
Visitors and residents are encouraged to view the illuminated Palace across the weekend and take a moment to reflect, learn more and support the campaign.
As a charity that cares for over 800 years of history in the heart of Wells, The Bishop’s Palace is proud to take part in initiatives that connect heritage with community and meaningful causes.
