January brings the first signs of spring which are usually the snowdrops in the arboretum and early Crocus too. There is a huge amount to enjoy in the gardens particularly in all our winter borders. We have planted for scent, colour and structure.
The Daphnes smell heavenly particularly the huge Daphne bholua ‘Jaqueline Posthill’ near the well house, that particular perfume often fills the air all around the well pool! The dogwoods become more colourful as the month progresses and even more so in any sunshine. We have planted the gardens for real contrast and whether you enjoy flowers, scent, diverse colour or structure you will not be disappointed.
We will continue to clear the borders, prune the roses and cut the yew hedges during milder spells. You can cut grass throughout winter during milder spells and also start adding compost as a mulch once the borders are clear.
