July brings something for everyone in The Bishop’s Palace gardens, whether you enjoy planting for heat and full sun, or those suited to damp shade. June was dry and very warm, following a record-breaking dry spring. Fortunately, much of the garden benefits from a high water table, well-composted soils and shade in places, meaning there’s still lots to enjoy, and hopefully to inspire.
The areas closest to the well pools remain damper and contain more moisture-loving plants. The areas near the boardwalk also benefit from shade, allowing Hostas and ferns to thrive. In complete contrast, our Hot Border peaks this month, bursting with rich reds, oranges, blues and yellows.
The exotic border has matured well since being planted last summer. The banana palms are now huge, along with the Yucca-like Beschorneria. The deep blue Agapanthus will contrast nicely with the red Cannas. Or you may prefer the Dahlia collection of named Bishops in bright, contrasting colours, all bursting into flower in July.
The Community Garden will be overflowing with produce, some of which makes its way to the café and sales area, along with beautiful cut flowers. The main tasks in July include keeping the borders tidy, deadheading roses, harvesting vegetables in the Community Garden, and watering when necessary.
The garden team comprises James, Jo, Tracey, Jess, Rob and Colin. Some of us are part-time, but you’ll usually find one of us available to answer any queries. We’re also incredibly grateful to our fantastic garden volunteers, who make a huge difference to what we can achieve.
