Fancy a trip to a beautiful summer garden – but not with moaning kids in tow?!
The Bishop’s Palace can make that happen…
Beautiful gardens are a lovely place to spend time over the summer – but can often lose their relaxing air when the kids are bored and just want to get the walk over with (we all know there’s nothing like your own child’s whinge to cut through a moment of calm). The Bishop’s Palace has been deliberately sculpted to offer something a little different – and because of that, it manages to be a sanctuary for adults as well as fun for kids.
The ancient site and RHS partner gardens provide a great backdrop for a family day out with lots to look at and discover. Ramparts, towers, poo-sticks bridges, ducks, swans and winding paths to explore plus a summer trail all about pollinators will keep kids entertained and busy while parents pause and enjoy the gardens.
The recent addition of a new splash zone, plus the return of the ever-popular water wheel within the Dragon’s Lair play area, provide stimulating entertainment that challenges both mind and body, especially on a hot sunny summer-holiday day. And if it’s not so cheery outdoors (or even if it is!) the Palace itself is a captivating way to spend time. With audio guides especially for kids, dressing up, the cabinet of curiosities and a new ‘table of games’. Kids will be happy to potter and play while adults take time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and unwind.
Plus, throughout the summer, special History Alive event days add extra excitement to your visit – and can’t fail to entertain even the most determinedly grumpy child!
On 1st – 2nd August and experience the sights, sounds and spirit of the 1940s with our Britain at War Day. With costumed performers, authentic activities and a welcoming family-friendly atmosphere.
Or pop along on August bank holiday weekend (29th – 31st August) and enjoy a medieval re-enactment including domestic crafts, camp skills and a bustling encampment experience.
And on 12th September it’s the turn of the Vikings! Including military drills and skimishes plus camp cooking and domestic living examples, this is one not to miss!
All History Alive events are included as part of a normal admission ticket (and free to Annual Pass holders and Friends of the Palace) so you can enjoy the event as well as all the usual garden and Palace access.
Gardens and Palace are open daily, 9.30am – 5.30pm.
The Bishop’s Table cafe is open every day 9.30 – 5.30pm, last orders 5pm. Breakfast 9.30 – 11.30am, lunch 11.30am – 3pm.
