Volunteers play a vital role at The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens and contribute to many different aspects of work here: from welcoming visitors, to conducting guided tours, providing maintenance support, working in the gardens, and community garden.

Maintainence Volunteer

This volunteer role involves assisting the Property Manager with routine maintenance tasks as well as larger-scale projects to care for and conserve The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens. Family Volunteering Days

Looking for a worthwhile family challenge that’s fun and free?

Become a member of our team for the day and come along to help us here at The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens. Tasks may include:

  • Welcoming visitors
  • Plaque polishing
  • Gardening

Two sessions each day 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3pm. The Family Volunteering Sessions will take place on:

  • Saturday 5th July – cancelled due to a lack of participants. We look forward to welcoming you next month.
  • Friday 8th August
  • Saturday 4th October

Priority will be given to families of school-age children who have not had the opportunity to visit us before. To book, please email: [email protected] 

Volunteering at The Bishop's Palace, Wells

Volunteering Update

Investing in Volunteering is a national standard which measures the level of management and care that voluntary organisations provide for their volunteers. It also measures the level of involvement of volunteers in the organisation.  This year, The Bishop’s Palace is undertaking the process and pictured are some of our team taking part in a self-assessment workshop. We have successfully completed phases one and two and hope to have completed the process by the autumn. We will keep you posted about our progress. One of the areas we would like to develop is to provide support to other local voluntary organisations in our community, and this will be one important step towards that.

Volunteer Trip to Doulting Quarry

Pictured are some of our volunteer guides on a field trip to Doulting Quarry. It was a fascinating and very informative day and we would like to thanks Adel Avery from The Earth Science Centre for making us all so welcome and tailoring the visit to focus on stone that is most relevant to The Bishop’s Palace. They also learnt about the history of the quarrying industry in The Mendips and how it is run nowadays.
