The Mills of Wells

The history of the mills along the St Andrew’s Stream

An exhibition created by the Wells Mills Interest Group and Wells City Archives.

This exhibition takes places upstairs at The Bishop’s Palace from 24th September until 14th October.

Did you know that the Water Mills of Wells were recorded in the 1086 Domesday survey? This fascinating exhibition charts their history from 1086 onwards.

The exhibition describes the watercourse that powered the mills (the source of which is the well pools in the Palace’s Gardens), what the mills were used for, the technology they employed and what has become of them since their heyday.

The exhibition is illustrated with maps and photographs of the Mills, including buildings that are still standing and those that have been lost.

Included in admission to the Palace.
