Director of Palace Enterprises (Wells) Ltd – non-executive and unpaid

The Palace Trust operates the Bishop’s Palace, Wells as a visitor heritage attraction on behalf of its owners, the Church Commissioners.  The trustees of the Palace Trust intend to appoint a new non-executive director to the board of their trading subsidiary. The subsidiary, Palace Enterprises (Wells) Ltd, undertakes the trading activities of the trust on a commercial basis to generate additional income for the charitable trust.

This new role is to provide an impartial judgement of the performance and strategy of PEL, from a perspective independent of the trustees of The Palace Trust, some of whom serve as directors of PEL. It is unpaid; reasonable expenses will be paid.

PEL is run by a professional management team all with relevant experience, led by the Chief Executive of The Palace Trust, Rosie Martin.

The new director will bring experience of relevance from a commercial environment, preferably catering, retail or event management, and be familiar with the pressures faced by a business with a turnover in range £0,5 – 1.5 million. Previous board level experience is not essential, but applicants must have the personal qualities to contribute to discussions at board level and be comfortable with the ethos of The Palace Trust.

Attendance at monthly management and director meetings is expected, the AGM and additional time on an ad hoc basis, for example in providing expert guidance in an advisory capacity to the management and trustees.
