Archives

The Palace maintains an archive of material (for example, files, letters, printed material, photos, articles, prints). A team of volunteers sorted and catalogued the archive some years ago and the work is on-going. The archive is used in numerous ways and one example was as a source of information when pulling together the history of The Gardens. The image above is from our on-line photo archive and shows a fallen tree on the South Lawn, and dates to the 1800s.  Click here for a description of this role.

Exhibitions and Interpretation

We are looking to improve the experience of of visitors when looking round the inside of the Palace building. There is now a role for a volunteer to research themes for interpretation of each room of The Bishop’s Palace to tell the story of The Palace’s history and heritage. In addition, there will be opportunities to offer support with research projects linked to The Bishop’s Palace’s extensive, ongoing and wider interpretation project. If you have an interest in research, maybe a love of history, then you might enjoy this  role.

Collections

The Bishop’s Palace collection is a mixed collection of furniture, paintings, sculpture, prints, silver, books, archaeological artefacts, and archival material. It has not been collected in a systematic way. The collection reflects the occupation of the Palace by the different Bishops, their families and staff. A proportion of the items in the collection have been acquired or commissioned due to need, such as the table in the Entrance Hall, or altar furniture in the Chapel. A volunteer role has been created to support the maintenance of an inventory and reviewing the condition of individual collection items. If this is of interst, click here.
