Stone and Spirit: Pippa Unwin’s Sculptures to Grace The Bishop’s Palace Gardens in Wells This Summer

This summer, the historic gardens of The Bishop’s Palace in Wells will host a captivating solo exhibition by acclaimed stone sculptor Pippa Unwin. Running from June through September 2025, the exhibition will showcase Unwin’s distinctive animal and nature-inspired carvings, thoughtfully placed within the Palace’s 14 acres of Grade II listed gardens.

Unwin returns to her roots with this exhibition, bringing her deep connection to the Somerset landscape and its rich heritage. Her sculptures, crafted from limestone, marble, and alabaster, reflect a profound respect for traditional stonemasonry techniques, capturing the essence and spirit of the natural world.

“I’ve always been fascinated with stone and carving,” says Unwin. “At school in Wells, I spent hours in the Cathedral, absorbed by the energy and humanity of the masons’ work.”

Visitors to The Bishop’s Palace can explore Unwin’s works amidst the tranquil gardens, which include herbaceous borders, arboretums, and the serene well pools that give the city its name. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the grounds, inviting guests to discover them along meandering paths and reflective spaces.

Exhibition opens 13th June until 14th September 2025 and is included with standard admission to The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens.
